Belize Real Estate: Buy From $35,000
Date: 10/20/2009 Author: Dan Prescher
From its bleached white beaches to its lush jungle hills, Belize is beautiful. And—if you shop smart—can be one of the most affordable escapes in the Caribbean.
Here is a rundown of some areas in Belize where the living is laidback, easy, and the real estate well-priced.
Belize Real Estate: Ambergris Caye
Ambergris Caye is the quintessential tropical island paradise. If the saying “No shoes, no shirt, no problem” wasn’t born here, it certainly came here to live.
The little town of San Pedro has grown up over the years—it has cars and trucks on the streets now—but golf carts are still the preferred means of getting around to the many little restaurants, bars, resorts, and beach homes stretched out along the island’s sandy coast.
With the second-longest barrier reef in the world just offshore, Ambergris Caye is a Mecca for divers, snorkelers, and fishermen, making for an active rental market.
Whether you want to kick back and enjoy some hammock time under a palm tree on the beach or stake a claim in one of the most popular tourist destinations along the Central American Caribbean coast, Ambergris Caye fits the bill.
An air-conditioned, two-bedroom, one-bathroom 900-square-foot house near the village costs $135,000. A mile and a half south of the village at Royal Palm Villas, one-bedroom ocean-side condos with 24-hour security, pool, and air-conditioning cost $149,000.
Belize Real Estate: Corozal
Corozal District is in the north of Belize next to the Mexican border, and is becoming a growing hotspot for expats who want to enjoy the tropical lifestyle at a big discount.
The town of Corozal isn’t on the ocean. It looks out on the Bay of Chetumal, a large, protected body of water that provides miles of calm, quiet shoreline. It has become home to a growing number of fun and funky residential projects.
It’s affordability that draws property shoppers here; prices are significantly lower than in the popular oceanfront areas farther south. For example, a two-bedroom, one-bathroom house with a landscaped yard on a 75-by-200-foot lot in Ranchito Village, about 1.5 miles south of Corozal Town, costs $49,000.
