The Real Scoop from Mexico...

Date: 05/07/2009

Dear International Living Reader,

The past couple of weeks have been pretty quiet around Merida, Mexico, where we live--thanks to the much-ballyhooed H1N1 flu.

Merida never shut down entirely, but some restaurants and movie theatres remain shuttered, and the schools are closed (as they are throughout the country). However, shopping malls, grocery stores, and fast-food restaurants are all open. And while surgical masks seem to have become a standard part of most employees’ uniforms, no one else wears them in public.

Mexico--Where Anyone Can Afford a Full-time Maid

Date: 04/20/2009

Dear International Living Reader,

I love having a full-time maid.

Like many expats who move to Mexico, I came here for the low cost of living. Low prices for goods like groceries and for basic services like healthcare mean more money left over for the incidentals that make life pleasant. For some, that means more travel, or golf club memberships, or eating out for every meal.

For me, it means being able to afford a full-time empleada--a maid. It’s great having someone to clean and organize the house (especially since cleaning and organizing a house aren’t among my better skills). But even more than that, having a maid buys me convenience and peace of mind. Here’s an example of what I mean:

I Always Look Forward to My Visits With Jesus

Date: 04/16/2009 Author: Suzan Haskins

There was a skip in my step as I walked home. Everything looked bright and fresh…all warm and sunshiney.

I had dreaded this day and its mid-morning appointment, but to my surprise, now that it was over, all was well with the world. No anxiety, no discomfort.

Of course, much of my euphoria had to do with comparisons to similar experiences back in Omaha. Time and again, the new life wins out over the old.

How We’re Lining Up Rental Income Overseas

Date: 04/15/2009 Author: Dan Prescher

Suzan and I have decided to spend part of each year in Ecuador. There are lots of good reasons for this, and I’ll talk about them in upcoming notes.

But the big question for us right now is: What do we do with our newly remodeled house in sunny Merida, Mexico, while we’re up in the Ecuadorian Andes? With the pool and the gardens, it’s not exactly a lock-and-leave unit.

The obvious answer is to...

The Next Big Find: Where our Scouts are Headed Now

Date: 04/06/2009 Author: Len Galvin

I began working at International Living nearly a decade ago--20 years after we first started identifying gorgeous real estate in not-yet-fashionable places...

Places where, in the worst case, you would always have a property you could enjoy. But where, in the best case--which often came to pass--your property would not only remain attractive…but also become much more valuable as the local economy improved and foreign buyers flocked.

We were first in Costa Rica in 1983…in Nicaragua in 1997…in Argentina in 2000…and in dozens of other destinations well before the mainstream media took notice of them.

We’d recommend a place to our readers…

Swapping My Wristwatch for Flip-flops in Mexico

Date: 12/02/2008

Dear International Living Reader,

When my husband and I announced that we were going to live our dream and move to La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur in Mexico, our friends were aghast. No one believed that I could pull the plug and disappear to a hammock on the beach.

It’s eight years later and we still live in La Paz…and we have no intention of going back. We moved here to unwind, slow down, repair our shattered nerves, and live a life of meaning that was not overrun with malls and freeways and the need to keep up. My sister visited us recently and was envious of our lifestyle.

Dear International Living Reader,

“We’ll need to live on a budget,” the man said as his wife hovered nearby with a look of concern on her face. “Where is the best place in Mexico to do that?”

It was the first day of our Live and Invest in Mexico seminar, and I urged the couple to keep listening…and to keep the faith. There were many presentations yet to come about the many places in Mexico where the living is wonderfully affordable. I was certain they would find their perfect place.
