It's Easy to Start a New Life on the Beach

Date: 04/14/2009

My biggest worry is about which break to surf in the morning or where my friend and gardener Mario has disappeared to. But it wasn’t always like this.

I left the daily grind of selling software in California nearly four years ago. I have never looked back. Instead, my wife and I are raising our two little girls in southern Nicaragua. We have a beautiful home right on the beach in Rancho Santana.

Dear International Living Reader,

Ronan McMahon is a numbers guy...he doesn’t often shop with his heart when it comes to real estate.

But he just told me that he found a place where his heart—and the numbers—matched up.

Dear International Living Reader,

I pack my guitar whenever Suzan and I go to Rancho Santana. I sit and pick with my friend and Rancho resident Tommy Gordon, have a few cold beers, and watch the sun set on all those Pacific coast surfers.

It’s the perfect place for rest and relaxation, and we had a chance to go there a few weeks ago for nothing but fun...but Suzan still had to write about it. She doesn’t play guitar, so she writes for relaxation. I’m not kidding. She’ll tell you all about our Rancho Santana mini-vacation below.

Dear International Living Reader,

Suzan and I lived in Nicaragua for the first four months of Daniel Ortega’s latest presidency.

We kept waiting for the sky to fall. We’re back in country this week, and so far the only things we see that have fallen are the real estate prices. Get an update on the situation below.

Dear International Living Reader,

I’m trying to get some writing done, but I can’t keep my eyes off the ocean.

About 20 young surfers dot the water just to the right of the rocky point where I’m sitting. Watching them work the incoming waves is like watching the waves themselves…hypnotic, endlessly fascinating.

Read more about Nicaragua in International Living Postcards—your daily escape

Along the southern Pacific coast of Nicaragua are rocky outcrops and pounding surf. Although frequently compared to the coast of Southern California, this doesn’t do Nicaragua’s Pacific coast justice in my mind. The wave breaks along this stretch of the Pacific attract surfers from all over the world…dramatic rock formations and ridges present unparalleled ocean vistas…and the brilliant scarlet and orange sunsets are truly jaw-dropping.
