Paradise in the Philippines...Three Dream Homes in Brazil...Stay Anywhere for Free...and More

Date: 05/01/2009 Author: Laura Sheridan

Steenie Harvey traveled to the Philippines for your May issue of the International Living Magazine. What she found was paradise. In fact, she was spellbound. “Tiny Boracay truly is one of the world’s most magical islands. So magical that even confirmed beach skeptics like me can’t help but fall in love with its laidback lifestyle,” Steenie reports.

Fringed by shallow turquoise waters, creamy white sands, and palm trees, this five-mile-long slice of tropical paradise lies around 230 miles south of the Philippines capital, Manila.

Whether you’re into water sports or lazing in hammocks with a mango smoothie, it delivers everything that vacation dreams are made of.

But why just vacation when you and your partner can live well here for $1,000 a month? And although you need to be careful with title, you can buy a 645-square-foot condo on the island for $120,000. Monthly rent will cost you less than $300. Dinner for two costs about $10, drinks included...and even a full-time nurse is only $60 to $100 per month. Read Steenie’s article, starting on page 16 of the May issue of International Living Magazine.

If one home just isn’t enough, then turn to page 9 to find out how you can sell your home in the U.S. and buy three dream homes in Brazil with the proceeds. The average house price in the U.S. is $235,000. With this, you gain the lifestyle enjoyed by Brazil’s wealthiest families--a place in the city, a house on the beach, and a mountain retreat. Plus when a part-time maid will do all your cleaning and shopping for $35 a month…and you and your spouse can eat out at the best restaurant in town for $30…your Social Security check buys you the kind of lifestyle the super rich enjoy.

Also in your May issue, learn how you can stay anywhere in the world, free of charge. Our cultural expert, Paul Lewis gives you the lowdown on the history of tango and the best places to learn this famed dance in Buenos Aires. IL’s Panama Insider, Jessica Ramesch tells you about the best property deals in Panama City and the quickest and easiest way to get residency there. From China to the U.K. we detail where you should shop for the best antiques...and we profile a family who are living the good life on their organic olive farm in Granada, Spain.
