Argentina's Best Road Trip
Date: 02/23/2004
On the Seven Lake Drive, be sure to stop at Lake Lacar--perfect for fly fishing.
One of the best things about spending time in Angostura, a picturesque mountain village in Patagonia's Lakes District, is the journey here; the Seven Lake Drive.
It's better on the way back, so plan your drive starting from Angostura, on Nahuel Huapi lake.
The drive takes you through through forests, along cliffs, past rivers and lakes. San Martin de los Andes, a town on the shores of Lake Lacar, is about half way and a good place to take a break.
Stay at the Villarino Lodge. The last time we were here, we had a late lunch of steaming pumpkin soup, followed by some freshly made potato gnocchi with mushroom and meat sauce (melts in the mouth), and finished with home made apple tart. The cost for two people, including coffee (and a beer for my husband, Paul) was $12. If you stay overnight--and it's worth it just to curl up by the huge open fireplace--rooms start at $40.
You'll find Villarino Lodge in the middle of the Seven Lake Drive, about 500 feet from the main road, in between two lakes. It's a perfect spot for fly fishing. It can be a little busy in high season (January and February) but during December or March you're pretty much on your own.
