I’ve just been ambushed by a hail of snowballs. In making my escape, I got entangled with a bunch of parents making angel wingprints in the snow with their arms and legs. In Argentina, snow wakes up the child in our hearts.

If you find the sizzling sun too hot to handle in August, go south (way south).

In the southern tip of Argentina you’ll find Bariloche, a town that will remind you of the Alps. Nahuel Huapi lake glistening in the middle of the valley, one of the country’s best-known ski resorts is here: Cerro Catedral. After a recent four-year, $8 million improvement plan, the resort has the usual ski lifts and gondolas, plus a terrain park and half-pipe for snowboarders.

But it’s not all about the snow. Bariloche has steakhouses with some of the best meat you’ll ever taste, ideally served with Argentine malbec wine or local beer from Sur. You’ll also find upscale bistros, great shopping, and fine-chocolate stores.

A week at the luxury five-star Design Suites Hotel costs $1,100 per week. That includes airport transfers, a weekly ski pass, and return flights from Buenos Aires. Oh, and a hearty breakfast each day.
