How to Slip Past Belize's Pica Pica's
Date: 07/10/2005
Dear International Living Reader,
Every spring, the waters of Belize fill with a million tiny jellyfish. Known as "thimbles," they look just like the sewing tool they’re named for. Thimbles fill the sea here for two to three weeks, until they end up on the shores of the cayes or along the coast of Mexico. Gone, yes, but not forgotten, since they leave behind their transparent eggs, referred to as " pica pica’s."
Belize has the second largest barrier reef in the world, so this is a hot spot for divers. We also have beautiful waters to snorkel or just swim in. But during pica pica time, chances are good that you’ll get stung .
There are a few ways to avoid this. First of all, use a lot of oil or greasy sunblock so the eggs will just slide off your skin. Secondly, put the oil or sun block everywhere--including under your swimsuit. Lastly, when you come out of the water, rinse off immediately with fresh water, as the invisible pica pica’s might still be on your skin. You won’t be able to see them, but you’ll feel them after you’re out of the water.
If you do get a couple of stings, you can use your regular anti-itch creams or lotions. The red ‘bites’ will last for two to three days. Nothing to worry about; you’ll survive to swim again.
