Your Man in El Salvador
Date: 04/01/2004I'm looking to retire in Central America. I still haven't pinned down a destination yet, but I wanted to tell you about a contact I made during a recent research trip to El Salvador.
I've never been to this part of the world before and frankly was a little skeptical about how suitable for retirees Central America really is (and yes, it is, truly). I don't speak Spanish, so when I checked into the hotel, I asked about a guide, someone who could travel with me for a few days as I explored the country.
I was referred to Mario Dominguez. He has a small company, Nahuat Tours, offering city tours, eco tours, coast tours and archeological tours. Plus, he can arrange fishing expeditions, flights...basically, anything to do with a trip to El Salvador.
I highly recommend Mario if you visit this country. He is extremely knowledgeable and his prices are reasonable. E-mail: info@nahuatours.com; tel. +503-874-8402.

P.S. I had a mild case of food poisoning while I was here and needed medical treatment. I was seen promptly at the hospital and the visit, care from two doctors and two nurses, plus the medicines prescribed to me, cost just $54.
Editor's note: If you're planning to visit Latin America this year, being able to speak Spanish will help you penetrate beneath the tourist level of a place, especially important if you're visiting with a view to a more permanent move. We recommend Puerta del Sol.
