Caribbean Confessions of a Golf Widow's Husband
Date: 08/12/2004My favorite golf club in Honduras is in La Ceiba (a two-hour ferry crossing--or an even shorter flight--from Roatan). Fortunately, I have an understanding wife.
Membership of the La Ceiba golf club costs $600 plus annual dues of $195 (this fee allows me to play other courses in Honduras too). The club also has a swimming pool and tennis courts. When I play La Ceiba, I normally tee off by 8.30 a.m. (if I travel from Roatan by ferry) or 7 a.m. (if I fly). At that time of the morning I have the course to myself.
La Ceiba's golf course is only nine holes but there is a second set of tee boxes that makes it 18 holes (only one of Honduras' six golf courses is an 18-hole course). The fairways are tree-lined and the greens are surrounded by plenty of sand. Like all Honduran golf clubs, wearing shorts is acceptable.
I also recommend the course at Tela (60 miles west of La Ceiba). After playing 18 holes in La Ceiba early one morning last week, I drove my wife to Tela because we had some business on the north coast. It's a relaxing drive through pineapple plantations and palm oil groves. When we drove past the Tela golf club, I wondered aloud if my presence at the meeting was necessary…my wife understood. I played nine holes among Tela's tall palm trees with the mountains in the background...I'm certain the distracting beauty of the scenery accounted for my poor score.

P.S. Remember, this is Honduras: These aren't U.S. championship-quality courses…but they're good nonetheless. Last month our La Ceiba club was host to the Honduran equivalent of the U.S. open, a big event for the town.
