Kuala Lumpur's massive Chow Kit market assaults the senses, especially the eyes and nose. Stalls are piled high with eggs, slaughtered poultry, and bloody chunks of meat. There are luridly colored Indian sweets, homemade cakes, and bulging-eyed fish. Fruit stalls are a colorfest of tiny yellow finger bananas, green and orange mangoes, lychees, limes, and scarlet-skinned dragon fruit.

Although the perfect beach is something of a tourism cliché, Datai Bay, on the north coast of Pulau Langkawi, Malaysia deserves every accolade. Sprinkled with tiny exotic seashells, the sands here really are talcum-powder white. Go out in the early morning, and you can spend ages marveling at the extraordinary patterns the spider crabs have made.

The concept of former Malaysian prime minister, Mahatir, these sister cities, around 30 miles from Kuala Lumpur, are both at the heart of what's envisaged as a Multimedia Super Corridor--a base for the I.T. industry along Silicon Valley lines. If things go according to a government plan, this corridor will eventually run from KL city center to the international airport, around 50 miles away.
