Montevideo, Uruguay
Uruguay is a warm country. Temperatures here allow you to enjoy outdoor activities all year round, and in some areas spring waters--104 degrees Fahrenheit--gush naturally from the heart of the land.
These springs are mainly concentrated in the areas of Colonia, Salto, and PaysandĂș, near the border with Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay.
The best thermal resorts here are:
Dayman: With spring waters topping 110 degrees Fahrenheit, this resort area features the first thermal water fun park in South America and is but 10 minutes from Salto, a thriving tourist town. While kids enjoy water game pools, adults can enjoy deeper pools with waterfalls and hydro massages.
Arapey: The natural spring here (50 miles from Salto) has a water flow of more than 100,000 gallons per hour coming from a depth of 4,250 feet. This thermal resort lies in a natural environment, surrounded by fields and woods. The five main pools of thermal waters are surrounded by lush vegetation; other amenities include a fun park for children, horse riding, and fishing.
Salto Grande: This thermal resort is six miles from Salto, with waters coming from a depth of 4,250 feet. It also features a water park opened in 2002, with lots of sports activities.
San Nicanor: North of PaysandĂș (a commercial and industrial city) and 12 miles away from Salto, this family-run resort also offers ranch-style estancia accommodation.
Guaviyu: This resort, 36 miles north of PaysandĂș, is an oasis in an unspoiled rural environment. Sailing and fishing are available, and you have a big choice of four- and five-star hotel accommodation, as well as motels, cabins, and campsites.
