Ringing out a Banner Year in Mexico

Date: 12/20/2007

December 21, 2007
Mérida, Mexico

With 2007 drawing to a close, I’ve been looking back over the past 12 months. And it’s been a banner year for Mexico. President Felipe Calderon has made great strides in his first year in office—he’s pushed through tax and pension reforms, stood firm in a bitter war against drug crime, and launched an ambitious infrastructure improvement program that will add thousands of miles of highway and new ports and airports across Mexico. He’s made Mexico safer and more politically stable and investment-friendly than it was a year ago. That’s the opinion of the Latin Business Chronicle, a publication that covers business and investment in all Latin America, and which recently named Calderon its Leader of the Year.

This year International Living also named Mexico the No. 1 retirement destination in its Global Retirement Index. This annual ranking looks at a variety of factors, from health care to cultural activities to cost of living. Those of us who live here have been saying for years that Mexico is a great place to live and invest…and the statistics agree with us.

Weather, of course, is one of the factors IL considered in its ranking….I love all those seasonal songs that talk about snow, and roasting chestnuts, and open fires, but when it comes to actually living with that…well, we’ll be celebrating the holidays in our bathing suits, sipping cold drinks and sniffing the sea breeze, and taking the occasional snooze in the hammock.

Thank you for sharing this great year with us. We wish you a warm and happy holiday season.

And feliz año nuevo!

Best regards,

Suzan Haskins
Latin America Editorial Director
