Dear International Living Reader,
Panama isn’t the only place with a canal.
Margaret Summerfield takes a panga down Costa Rica’s 70-mile-long Tortuguera Canal...but she tells me you’re more likely to come face-to-face with a crocodile than a container ship on this waterway.
What did she find at the end? She’ll tell you all about it below.

Dear International Living Reader,
The road and infrastructure work is starting in southern Costa Rica...but land prices there are still some of the lowest in the country.
This is your chance to get in ahead of the curve. Stake out a position and let the government bring the improvements...and the profits...to you.

I’ve been there before, but her description let me see it through fresh eyes. And the prices she found there opened my eyes even wider.
See what I mean below.

"Is this really a road?"
Suzan couldn’t believe it, and neither could I. We'd just gotten married in San Jose, Costa Rica, and we were spending our honeymoon driving around the country in a rented 4x4.
Somehow we ended up on what looked and felt like a 6-foot-wide, 20-mile-long bombing range running along Costa Rica’s incredible Pacific coast.
The farm fields we were driving past looked smoother. The little SUV could have disappeared in some of those potholes.
That was 11 years ago, and, believe it or not, it turned out to be the best road trip I’ve ever taken.
Pavement would have made it even better, though, and now I hear of improved roads in southern Costa Rica. Not only that...but a new airport, as well.
Rumors of roads and airports are as common as sand on the beach in Central America, but there might be something to this, and if it's true, it could mean huge opportunity for living and investment. Read more about it below.

Learn more about how to save money on health care overseas in International Living Postcards—your daily escape
Every day I’m reminded of the increasing cost of health care in the U.S. and the strategies the IL readers are coming up with to beat it.
For example, in a recent issue of International Living magazine, reader Patrick MacDowell told us an amazing story about saving 75% on his medical procedure in Costa Rica…this is even with his round-trip airfare included.
Here’s an excerpt from Patrick’s story:
