I just thought of eight more places I want to add to the list I sent you yesterday about the best places to retire in Latin America:
Retire in Latin America Pick #1: Costa Rica
Lake Arenal in Costa Rica is gorgeous. Tucked in the volcanic hills of Guanacaste, it’s surprising that this 40-square-mile freshwater lake is only two hours from the international airport at Liberia and about 80 miles from the nearest beach. There are many small communities around the lake, but I like Nuevo Arenal. No matter your choice, you’re sure to find one that suits. (International Living’s Costa Rica: The Owner’s Manual lists many places in Costa Rica that make sense for the budget-conscious. If you’re thinking about a move here, check it out…during December you get 25% off.)
Retire in Latin America Pick #2: Guatemala
Lake Atitlan in Guatemala is similar to Lake Arenal, in that there are many small villages that surround this enormous caldera lake. Panajachel is the largest community, and somewhat of a toursity place, but with a colorful and calming Mayan influence. I’d suggest the villages of Santa Catarina, Santa Cruz, San Marcos, and Santiago for low-cost but culture-rich living. As a runner-up, I’d pick Antigua, an hour from Lake Atitlan, even though it’s definitely a tourist city and therefore more expensive.
Retire in Latin America Pick #3: Argentina
San Rafael, Argentina is in the Mendoza province of northern Argentina--what’s not to like about one of the world’s greatest wine-growing regions? With its gorgeous dramatic landscape, it reminds me of Colorado’s front range. It’s got a very safe, homey feel and the food can’t be beat! There are two drawbacks though: it takes a long time to get here from the U.S. or Canada (flying time to San Rafael from Buenos Aires is a bit over two hours), and winter months (June-August) can bring chilly temperatures, with lows in the mid-30s.
If you’re attracted to beach-side living and want to retire near the sand, watch for my list of affordable beach communities in Latin America, coming soon.
