Casco Viejo is one of the most charming neighborhoods in Panama City. With its colonial structures, historic sites, green plazas, and narrow streets, it's a favorite place for visitors and, of course, for residents like us.
When you come for a visit, be sure to see Las Iglesias, or The Churches, located in the Cathedral Plaza. Las Iglesias are beloved and popular, and they're part of the history of Casco Viejo, like the Iglesia de San José, whose golden altar was hidden with black paint from the pirates who sacked Panama Viejo (the original city) in 1671.
Here at International Living's Local Office, we feel privileged that our newly renovated building is located in the Cathedral Plaza, next to the Panama Canal Museum and just in front of the stunning Metropolitan Cathedral. And, even better, more improvements are coming to the neighborhood. Las Iglesias are going to be renovated.
The Archbishop of Panama, the Housing Minister, the Casco Antiguo offices, and Patrimonio Histórico are working together on a big restoration project which will include the Metropolitan Cathedral and the churches of La Merced, San Francisco, and Santa Ana.
The Metropolitan Cathedral will be one of the first to be restored, with walls of calicanto, a mix of sand, rocks, and cement. The two white towers will shine, topped with pearl, and the original bells from Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral in Panama Viejo ring out. We're looking forward to hearing them from here.
