Dear International Living Reader,
Where in the world can you retire at 19?
At 19?!
Good question. And the answer is, only one place in the world: Panama.
In the September issue of International Living, you can learn retirement secrets like this that not one person in a million is privy to. For 25 years, we’ve covered the world like no other publication, and there’s no other place in the world where you can get the inside scoop on the world’s top retirement havens.
Every year, International Living publishes the world’s best Global Retirement Index. We search the globe for the best places to live, work, invest, and retire. And in the latest issue of IL, you’ll find detailed profiles of our top 30 picks in this year’s just-released Index.
(You can now read the whole September issue online here. But it’s available to subscribers only. If you are not a subscriber, follow this link to subscribe and get full access to this valuable report right away.)
For the fifth year running, Panama takes first place, hands down. It’s not a big surprise to us, because no other country on earth has such a generous program to attract pensioners and retirees. But you may be shocked to know that in Panama it’s possible to qualify for the pensionado program at the tender age of 19.
A New Way Of Looking At Retirement!
Panama is an innovative country. They realize that "retirement" is being redefined in the 21st century and that the new generation of retirees has little in common with retirees of 50 years ago. In Panama, retirement isn’t based on age, it’s based on unearned income.
If you can show that you have a pension or benefit program that pays you a minimum of $500 per month, you can qualify. But… you must be at least 19 years of age.
If you meet those requirements (and a few more, such as no criminal record) you can qualify for a generous package of retiree benefits, including a 50% discount on hotel stays, a 30% discount on public transport, a 20% discount on doctors visits, and much more.
Plus… Panama is safe… stable… friendly… and boasts the best health care and infrastructure in Central America. But those are only the bold headlines. As you take time to learn more about Panama, it just keeps looking better. Panama boasts pristine nature. The country's wildlife is abundant. That’s why The Smithsonian’s Tropical Research Center is located here, in Barrio Colorado.
And Bocas del Toro, the most popular but still little-known tourist destination, attracts those in search of adventures off the beaten trail in a relaxed Caribbean setting. There you’ll find rain forests, white-sand beaches…and everything you could desire in a tropical paradise: snorkeling, fishing, sailing… and more. Plus you can explore the territories of seven indigenous peoples of Panama in remote locations around the country. For example, in Bocas there are Ngoebe-Buglé villages, where natives live just as they have for centuries.
Maybe Panama Isn’t Your Dream Retirement Location?
There’s no perfect place for everyone. No one-country-fits-all paradise. People have different tastes, needs, wants, and desires.
If you hate the tropics, Panama is not for you. (Although it might surprise you that just an hour away from the coast in the mountainous region of Chiriqui, you can find spring-like temperatures all year long!)
Maybe you would prefer our #2 retirement destination, France… or #3, Malta. But the best thing about our Annual Retirement Index is that it opens a world of options to you; options that you may not have otherwise considered.
Our Index allows you to look over the factors that are most important to you…whatever they may be. Climate? Cost of living? Health care? Telecommunications infrastructure? Safety? Taxes? Accessibility to the States for return visits? How friendly the people are? We report on these factors and much more…
Discover A World Of Retirement Options!
Maybe you aren’t anywhere close to retirement. Nevertheless, it’s important to think about and plan for. It won’t be long before that phase of your life creeps up on you. If you plan now, you may be able to secure your dream location for when you do retire. Prices are going up in desirable places all over the world. Now might be the time to stake your claim to your own beachfront, lakeside, or mountaintop retirement retreat… before it’s priced outside of your reach.
As wonderful as the pensionado program is in Panama, it’s not the only one. In our annual global retirement index, you will learn about other programs, for example the one in Nicaragua, which requires you be only 45 years old and prove an income of $400 a month to qualify. This program would be accessible to almost all of our readers.
Most of the current issue is devoted to our Annual Retirement Index, in which we show you clearly the comparative advantages (and, yes, the disadvantages, too) of the best retirement paradises in the world. But wait… there’s more than just the Annual Retirement Index in the latest issue of IL!
