Dear International Living Reader,
On my first excursion to the Pacific beaches of Panama, the bus turned off the Pan American Highway less than 45 minutes out of Panama City. We traveled for a few minutes down a quiet country lane to a village called Nueva Gorgona and pulled over at a peaceful, green property with large trees and a tranquil stretch of tree-lined, white-sand beach. The ocean was calm and warm, and from the beach I could see for miles in both directions…a view that included a mostly rural, undeveloped stretch of beachfront.
This is Playa Serena, site of the sparkling new Playa Serena beachfront apartments…or rather, it will be the site. What’s here now bears more resemblance to a seaside park than an oceanfront resort. Frankly, I like the neighborhood here in this area of small weekend homes in the country, situated on quiet lanes, about five minutes from the town of Coronado. But that’s not all I like about the community that’s planned to go here.
The apartments themselves will be in a unique layout, such that each one has an ocean view, whether you’re on the first floor or the twentieth. Also, the spacious 1 1/4-acre park area between the condos and the beach will be pleasantly laid out with its two pools, gazebos, tennis courts, and café tables. (But as we remind you often, "buy what you see.")
I’ll admit that I was also attracted by the pre-construction prices, which were about the lowest I’ve seen for a beachside condo in Panama. The apartments have two large glass walls to take full advantage of the ocean view, and range in size from just under 1,200 square feet to around 1,350 square feet. Prices start at $132,000 and go up $1,000 per floor.
But best of all was the 50 minutes it took to get here from Panama City, with its first-rate restaurants, shopping, and health care.

P.S. I called one of the owners of Playa Serena--who is a personal friend of mine from Panama--and she told me that she’d knock an extra $500 off the pre-construction prices for IL readers.
