Four Ways to Earn a Living in Mexico

Hola Mexico Insiders,

When you dream of moving to Mexico, does your dream include having a job? Mine did. I wanted to make a lifestyle change, to give up the 9-to-5 rat race, to lower my costs while raising my quality of life…but I also wanted to keep working.

Sure, I had some money saved. But in today’s economic climate, where the cost of everything is skyrocketing, how many of us actually feel comfortable saying, “Right, I have enough saved to last me for the rest of my life, come what may”? Not me. I figure it never hurts to keep a little money rolling in. Besides, I like staying busy.

I’ve since learned that I’m pretty typical in that regard. Perhaps half the people who write me asking about Mexico want to know about working here. Often they need some extra income to afford the move—especially if they want to move at a younger age. Sometimes their main goal is having a project—but, aware of today’s bleak economic outlook, they don’t mind the money, either.

But how do you work in Mexico? Despite NAFTA, it’s not the same as working in your own country. You must meet certain requirements in order to work in Mexico legally, with the appropriate visas and permits. And while Mexico makes it easier than many, many countries, not everyone can get a working visa.

Thousands of expats do work in Mexico, however—and in the July issue of Mexico Insider, we tell you how you can join their numbers. We write about four ways that you can work legally and profitably in Mexico—four strategies for starting a new working life south of the border.

So if your Mexico dream includes a paycheck as well as a hammock swaying under a palm tree, take heart. There are ways to get both.
