International Living Postcards-- your daily escape

Thanksgiving, 2005
Paris, France

Dear International Living Reader,

This is the seventh Thanksgiving we're celebrating as expats. Nevertheless, each year, we gear up for a U.S.-style celebration…without the U.S.

Today, Lief, Kaitlin, Jack, and I will sit down with friends here in Paris, some American, some French, to feast on turkey and all the trimmings…even fresh-made cranberry sauce and baked apples.

Our little family comes together with new and old friends just as Lief and I prepare to head this weekend to Florida for our final Live Overseas Conference of 2005. We're not the only ones, of course. The entire far-flung International Living family will, likewise, be making its way to Fort Lauderdale in the next few days.

But, today, they…and we…and you, too…are putting those agendas aside. Today, you and we are taking a few hours off…a few hours with families and friends. Specifically, how are our IL contributors celebrating Thanksgiving this year?

Lee Harrison and his partner, Julie, are with Julie's mom in Arizona.

Steenie Harvey is at 30,000 feet somewhere over Southeast Asia (or possibly Kazakhstan), on her way home to Ireland from her recent trip to Malaysia.

Dan Prescher and Suzan Haskins are in San Miguel de Allende, enjoying dinner with friends.

Janine Goben is in Denver with her sons (Continental Airlines has direct flights from Roatan to Houston on Saturdays).

Carol Milligan is celebrating Thanksgiving at her sister's house in Florence.

Brandon Clogston is planning a big day of turkey, beer, and football in his new hometown, Panama City.

I know I speak for all of them…as well as every other contributor to these daily Postcards…when I say that we hope you're enjoying reading them as much as we're enjoying preparing them for you.

Perhaps you'll forgive a little sentimentalism today, as we say, "Thank you." You've been our constant companion through these seven years of full-scale relocations and renovations, new beginnings and restarts, trials, tribulations, grand adventures…and hundreds of thousands of frequent flyer miles.

Thank you for sticking with us. Indeed, the fun has just begun.

Wherever you find yourself today, we hope you're among friends and family, sharing a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Meet Suzan and Dan

In January 2003 IL's husband-and-wife team in Mexico, Dan Prescher and Suzan Haskins, traveled extensively to find the Mexican city offering the best opportunities for the would-be expat, retiree, or investor in Mexico. After spending a year at Lake Chapala, in 2004 they settled in San Miguel de Allende.

"We have to admit it…we must have one of the best jobs in the world. Living in Mexico, enjoying the best climate we've ever experienced, traveling around this magnificent country searching out the best deals and opportunities possible for people who dream about living La Vida Mexico for themselves. And it's a wonderful dream--one that you can make come true for yourself."

Meet Brandon

As a recent transplant to Panama, Brandon Clogston is busy exploring…with a keen eye…the many living, investment, and real estate opportunities available throughout this country.

"Panama offers you a world of comfort that's nearly impossible to find anywhere else South of the U.S. border. That's why Panama ranks as the World's #1 Retirement Haven for the 5th straight year."

Meet Steenie

Steenie Harvey lives in County Roscommon in the west of Ireland. Born in England of Latvian and English parents, she moved to Ireland in 1988 with her Scottish husband Michael, and their daughter Magdalen. After renting a house for a year, Steenie and her family decided to buy their own Irish property--a hilltop cottage overlooking the magical waters of Lough Key.

Steenie is International Living's roving Europe and Asia editor.

"I left school at 15 to live in a hippy squat house in London. I've tended bar in a strip joint…inspected bolts at a factory…waitressed in a Chinese restaurant…clerked at a print shop where I typed invoices and lied to customers about why their orders weren't ready…

"But today I get paid to visit white sand Caribbean beaches…wildlife sanctuaries in Borneo…Indian Ocean hideaways…Rome…Paris…London…

"I invite you to do the same."
