International Living Postcards-- your daily escape

Dear International Living Reader,
The eight of them jumped overboard at once and began swimming to shore. The rest of us loaded into the dingy and motored past. Just before the water's edge, I helped Jack, 5, out of the little boat, and he and I waded to the beach. He began picking up stones and shells, and I turned to face the sea.
Quintessential Caribbean. That doesn't do the scene justice, but everything else is cliche--emerald water sparkling in the sunlight as far as you can see…small islands breaking the horizon…soft white sand beneath your feet…and, behind you, as you glance around, palm trees swaying in the early-morning breeze.
A stolen day on a tropical isle stretched before us. Our eight swimmers ( International Living staff plus my daughter, Kaitlin) made it to the beach. They joined Jack in his shell hunt, stretched out towels, pulled out a frisbee, and opened the coolers the boat staff had brought over with us in the dingy. We planned a busy day of lazing on the beach…
This is my favorite beach story. After more than 25 years spent traveling the world, the editors, contributors, and friends of International Living have discovered more than a few beaches we like to think of as our own little secrets.
Tourist resorts appeal to the traveler who enjoys the convenience of nearby restaurants, nightclubs, and bars, as well as the many on-site amenities provided. But you may have found that the added stress inherent in these overcrowded facilities outweighs the benefits of the hot stone massages you can have there.
Our recommendation? Pack a picnic lunch, a good read, and a swimsuit (or not) and head for the road less traveled. We've compiled Twenty-five of the World's Best Beaches to help you navigate that road…and as an IL Postcards reader, it's yours for free. You can download it in PDF format here.
