I've just discovered an unusual new development in the Bordeaux region of southwest France. It's not exactly bargain basement but might be worth further investigation if you're looking for a luxury resort with a difference-and only minutes from the Unesco World Heritage site of Saint Emilion.
It's called the Domaine Haut-Gardegan and it's set in an estate of 100 hectares with an 18-hole golf course. Designed by Eldon Beck (of Intrawest villages in Whistler and Tremblant fame), many of the existing historic buildings will be kept and renovated in line with the local architecture. The choice of housing will also be varied with prices starting at 300,000 euro ($403,000).
I haven't visited it yet, but if I do I'll keep you posted. An overview of the project can be found at www.haut-gardegan.com.
