"This Life May Not Be for Everyone"

Date: 09/18/2003

September 19, 2003

Dear International Living Reader,

I break the surface of the calm sea in 20 crystal-clear feet of warm tropical water, to de-fog my faceplate. Off to the east, a giant cruise ship approaches the Nassau harbor, backlit by the rising sun. I've got over two hours before my first appointment of the day; plenty of time to check out this reef, get a shower and dress before heading into town. This is The Bahamas--silky fine white-sand beaches, excellent snorkeling and diving, gambling, and quintessential island life--the yardstick that we use to measure other islands…

I had to smile when I read a recent postcard from Steenie Harvey (see: "Are you guys for real?"). It seems that there's a lot of skepticism out there about the travel writer business, which I can certainly understand. However, having just returned from eight all-expenses-paid days in The Bahamas covering three islands and experiencing what may be the world's best beaches, diving, boating, and restaurants, I'll have to side with Steenie on this one.

In the past year I've traveled to: two beautiful areas of the Ecuadorian coast; tropical islands; the Valley of Longevity (where I bought property); the Amazon rainforest, which I explored in the company of a genuine Shaman; sophisticated Chile, one of my favorite South American countries; and more. Plus, I've sold articles to travel publications on each destination.

Upcoming destinations on my travel itinerary include Cuba, Argentina, and Bolivia. I have a writing contract already for some of these; but for the others, I know I'll be able to sell my articles upon my return.

It sure beats my old daily routine at a desk back in New York, but this life may not be for everyone. There's a lot of hard work involved, both while traveling, and when you get home. Plus, to be honest, I'm fine without the additional competition.

Take care,

Lee Harrison
