Mexico Courts European Investment this Week

Date: 06/06/2007

Mexico's President Felipe Calderón is in Europe this week to promote European trade and investment in Mexico. This coincides with Mexico's attending a Group of 8 (G8) Summit June 6-8 at European Union headquarters in Brussels. Mexico has been invited to attend the summit along with four other developing powerhouses: Brazil, China, India, and South Africa.Mexico's economy has long depended heavily on the United States: 80% of Mexico's exports go to the U.S. And U.S. tourists are the biggest group contributing to Mexico's important tourism sector. Now President Calderón says he wants to diversify Mexico's commercial and economic relations. His trip to Europe is one step toward making this happen. In addition to meeting with top European Union officials in Brussels, he'll also visit four major European countries. His goal? Getting more Mexican products in European markets, more European investment in Mexico, and more European tourists at Mexican destinations. Will this strategy work? Only time will tell. But clearly Europe is listening. And by grouping Mexico with mega-economies like China and India, the European Union sends a signal of Mexico's growing clout-not only within Latin America but around the world.Best Regards,Suzan HaskinsEditor, Mexico InsiderInternational LivingP.S. Just hours ago, I left San Miguel de Allende where we held what I believe was out best-ever Live and Prosper in Mexico seminar. It was so much fun and I am so tired….but very much looking forward to doing it all again…this time at the beach.
