A New Riviera Maya Airport?

Date: 06/11/2007

The Riviera Maya has grown much faster as a tourist destination than government experts anticipated, say Mexican press sources. The result, they contend, is that government plans for developing tourist infrastructure are years behind the actual rate of growth.

And growth in this area is galloping. According to these sources, hotel construction has averaged over 9% per year the last three years, and over 11% last year. A whopping 2.6 million tourists visited in 2006. And permanent population is growing at 20% a year.
One key part of tourist infrastructure here-the proposed new airport-does seem to be moving slowly, though there is some progress. The latest news: Mexican airport operator Asur is expected to put in a bid to build and run the new airport. It makes sense. Asur already runs the Cancún airport and has just announced that it will invest $56 million to build another runway there.

And Tulum has recently asked the state government to upgrade it to the status of a municipality. It's likely that the proposed airport plays a role: If Tulum does become a municipality, the proposed site for the airport will fall within its boundaries.
