Mexican Condos Are Now King for Those Seeking Fun in the Sun

Date: 07/24/2007

Have you ever dreamed about buying or renting that little condo in Mexico? (Who hasn't?) In any case, your Mexico dreamin' may have helped to fuel a trend-one that's changing the face of Mexican tourism.

Over the past three years, thanks to skyrocketing demand, condominiums have replaced hotels as the number one tourist investment in Mexico, say news sources. Real estate moguls who previously would have funded 500-room hotels are now building condominium developments or small, boutique inns.

The condo craze is largely due to U.S. baby boomers, who are now approaching retirement and looking to buy a retirement home in Mexico, and to well-heeled Mexicans seeking a second home. But the trend is also fueled by discriminating tourists: In growing numbers, they're spurning large hotels for the privacy and intimacy of small, boutique hotels and condos.

The trend can be seen in Acapulco, where the last large hotel was built nine years ago-and where some 20 condominium projects are currently underway. (Move over, Panama.) But it can also be seen in other coastal resorts, including CancĂșn, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, and Huatulco.
For those of you still searching for that perfect home in the sun, this is all good news-there will be plenty of choices to pick from.
